| Zusammenfassung: | The plaster cast of a Romanesque stucco parapet has adorned the west gallery of St.Vitus Church in Gröningen Monastery for around 120 years. The figurative relief is part of an iconography of the Last Judgement, which was continued below the sculpture as a mural painting2. has been continued. As the church had been falling into increasing disrepair since the 16th century, it seemed impossible to preserve the Romanesque parapet in situ at the beginning of the 20th century. It was therefore decided to remove and relocate the object to the former Kaiser-Friedrich-Museum (now the Bodemuseum) in Berlin. In return, the parish received a completed cast, which was made in 1902 in the Charlottenburg plaster mold workshop and installed and painted in the church. The former monastery church in its present form is a three-aisled basilica reduced to a nave and transept. The building is located on the Romanesque Road, a tourist route through Saxony-Anhalt. However, since the church has not been used for several years, there are hardly any visitors. This has led to neglect of the furnishings, which are covered in a thick layer of dust. The cast proves to be largely unexplored. Neither the exact production technology nor the historical reception has been investigated. Its existence and condition have not been recorded since at least 2017, but probably not since its installation in 1902. In order to close this research gap, the work on the object will be supplemented with research in archives. The aim of this work is to create a conservation concept for the cast. To this end, the object will be examined phenomenologically so that its condition and state can be recorded. Furthermore, the history of the object will be analyzed in order to explain the phenomena. Sample areas will be used to evaluate the feasibility of necessary conservation measures. The often erroneous assumption that casts are mere copies and therefore inferior to “the original” is to be revised by citing the demanding and often time-consuming production of a cast. It is hoped that this will raise awareness of this object, which has previously received less attention. |
