Zusammenfassung: This master thesis explores the use of terahertz radiation to monitor the consolidation of paint layers on panel paintings. A mean of corroborating the efficacy of such conservation treatments is still lacking and is of enormous importance for their sustainability. The aim is to locate holes underneath the paint layers to establish the need for consolidation of an artifact and subsequently the success of the consolidation process as such.
For this, experiments were carried out on mock-up samples and an original panel painting. (Micro-)computed tomography scans are used for comparative testing of terahertz measurements. The results on the samples show that terahertz radiation can detect void spaces under the paint layer. Moreo-ver, it can determine the treatment’s success by the chance in the reflectance spectra of the consolidated area. Nonetheless, it was not able to identify the consolidation agent as an individual
phase. The transfer of these results to the condi-
tions of the panel painting is less clear. In conclusion, although further research on original
artworks is necessary to collect more data and thus place the findings on a broader, more reliable basis, it was corroborated that terahertz radiation can be applied to monitor and control consolidation treatments
