Zusammenfassung: | This Master's thesis presents the Palmesel from the Protestant Church of St. Sylvester in Quakenbrück, Osnabrück. The life-size wooden sculpture was carved in full relief and painted in polychrome. Today, the object is in fragments. Some crucial parts are missing and, apart from some traces, the original paint is lost and so the bare wood is visible. Based on the findings of the examinations the figure of the procession Palm donkey can be attributed to the early 16th Century. This work begins with the object identification and a study of the artistic and cultural history of the palmesel. The subsequent chapters deal with the technological examinations of the wooden substrate and the painting technology. Previous alterations made to the object are examined and dated. Then, the current status of the object is investigated and existing alterations and damage are identified. In the final chapter, a treatment plan is created from the knowledge acquired. Possibilities for both conservation of the wood substrate and the painted surface, as well as an optimal object presention are developed and presented. |
