Zusammenfassung: The subject of this work is the technological analysis, documentation and above all the conservation and restoration of a fragmentary painted and embroidered procession banner. The treatment of previous restorations represented the main challenge apart from to the problem of the material combination of textile, painting and metal thread embroidery.
The execution of the painting, datable 1726, is attributed to the Ticino artist Giuseppe Antonio Petrini. It is regarded as the only preserved example of numerous procession banners by this artist.
The removal of previous restorations was decided upon and carried out after detailed investigations into their historic importance, technological classification and aesthetic effect. This treatment has re-established the comprehensible relationship between the different areas of the picture and made its overall composition more easily legible.
