Zusammenfassung: Historical sources that deal with cinnabar and vermilion are in the center of this diploma thesis. The study of a large number of written sources in different areas shows clearly the development of cinnabar and vermilion in Europe between 1500 to 1900. Main aspects in this thesis are historical sources about the formation of the mineral cinnabar (HgS), the location and the history of deposits, the montanistic extraction of the ore and the synthesis of vermillon. The analysis of historical recipies for vermilion through sulphur and mercury proved that many of them are influenced by alchemical ideas and do not provide practical details. It may be assumed that there was enough supply with the red synthetic artists´ pigment since the trade with, and the manufacture of vermilion was well developed in the 16th centrury. The final part of the thesis shows the trade of cinnabar and vermilion and their use in paintings. An overwiew of the results of analyses of cinnabar and vermilion of the Doerner-Institut. Munich and of historical weights is given in the appendix. In addition a bibliography of the historical and new sources is offered.
