Zusammenfassung: It wasn’t until recent years that the conservation/restoration of wooden objects damaged be fire was given more attention. So far no publications about the consolidation of carbonised wood are known from a survey. This thesis deals with basic questions regarding conservation/restoration of carbonised art. The primary goal was to find an appropriate medium for the consolidation of carbonised wood. In the introduction the decay of wood caused by fire is explained and the problem is exemplified by a fire-damaged sculpture made of oak wood, whose various stages of decay have been described. After describing the structure of wooden cells, the pyrolytic decay of wood is discussed and various methods of consolidation as well as consolidation mediums are tested. To this end the thermoplastic synthetic resins Mowital B 30 H, Plexigum PQ 611 and Regalrez 1094 were tested in various solvent, concentrations and methods of penetration. Based on these limited studies, it was discovered however, that a consolidation of carbonised oak wood is possible only to a certain extent.
