Zusammenfassung: | The water tower of the city of Halle (Saale) is a functional building, which towers above the surrounding area of the train station and dominates the skyline. The shaft is built from brickwork and ornated with neo-roman forms made of clinker. The steel- and container construction resting on the brickwork bears features of Art-nouveau with its curved railing. Constructed around 1910 the tower was used up to the 80‘s primarily to increase the pressure in the internal water network of the train operating company. From the spherical container, holding a capacity of 200 m³, steamtrains were supplied with water for their boilers. The main part of this dissertation is the documentation of the present remains. In order to allow any comment on the condition of the technical monument, the brickwork as well as the steel construction were examined and measured in detail. In addition, lacquer- and steel samples were analysed and the remaining density of the walls were determined. On the basis of these findings, a carefully designed concept to restore and conserve the existing premise has been divised taking a possible future usage into consideration, which fulfils the requirements of the Deutsche Bahn (German Railways). A clinker facade facing the station has been cleaned to illustrate the aims of the project and to test the technology available for stone cleansing. As a result, the tower has moved into the public’s perception. |
