Zusammenfassung: | The author examines the vault paintings in the Church of St. Mary in Herzberg as an example for the alteration of pigments particular at medieval wallpaintings. It is shown that the alteration on red lead and copper pigments, which appear at those paintings, are caused by the exterior influence of chlorides. It is proven that red lead was changed into white lead chlorides and azurite was changed into green basic copper chloride. Humidity seems to increase the alteration from blue to green. It is especially interesting that the fading of red lead, which has not been sufficiently dealt with by scholars so far, makes the red lead containing paintlayers look brown. |
