| Zusammenfassung: | This research investigates the damage phenomenon of phthalate accumulation on colour slides on Kodak Ektachrome films. When stored in soft PVC plastic sleeves, droplet-shaped, yellowish deposits can appear on the image layer side of framed 35 mm colour slides. A part of the Ringier photographic archive in the Aargau State Archives in Aarau served as a case study. In the main part of the work, parameters relevant to the occurrence of the damage phenomenon were investigated. Based on a comprehensive data collection in the sub-stock of the archive, it was found that only Ektachrome films from the period 1978-1983, which were processed in the E 6 process, showed phthalate deposits. Most of the films with deposits were produced at Kodak´s Canadian plant. The phenomenon could be reproduced by artificial ageing. Examination of colour slides in comparative stocks showed that the phenomenon can also occur on younger Ektachrome colour slides of non-Canadian production. It is therefore questionable to what extent the dating and production plant of the slides are relevant. Rather than the dating and production plant of the film, the emulsion type, the processing process of the films (Ektachrome film in the E-6 process) and the presence of a specific colour coupler system seem to play a role in the formation of deposits. ATR-FTIR investigations revealed that uncoupled dye couplers are dissolved in the deposits, which presumably cause the yellow colouration. UV/VIS spectral measurements suggested that these are not yellow image dyes. These findings are relevant for possible cleaning measures. |
