| Zusammenfassung: | The chandelier in the conference room of Vienna’s Hofburg can be attributed to the workshop of the Milanese stone cutter Giovanni Battista Metellino and was fabricated in the early 18th century. Its cast iron frame is decorated with numerous rock crystal elements. Over time, it has undergone several reworkings, from the gilding of the iron frame by the Viennese company J. & L. Lobmeyr to the electrification at the end of the 19th century. In addition to analyzing the original and secondary inventory as well as the condition of the object, a concept for the conservation and restoration of the whole chandelier is created. The focus lies on a discussion about how to deal with the high-quality secondary gilding. Finally, the measures are carried out by restoring sample areas of two dismantled chandelier arms. |
