Zusammenfassung: | This gilded armchair is located in the Museum of Applied Arts and originates from one of the earliest furniture stores in Vienna, the prestigious “Danhauser Möbelfabrik”. It was part of the initial installation of the palais archduke Carls (Albertina) and is characterized by its distinctive design. Not only its style, but also in its construction, the armchair stands out due to its metal reinvorced armrests. The main focus of this thesis lies in the analysis of the structure and techniques of this metal construction and its incorporation into the carved armrests. Based on marks of tools, a comparative literature research, as well as the X-ray examination of the object, the tools and techniques used will be reviewed. Furthermore, the production techniques of the turned and carved elements, as well as the gilding and hallmarking will be examined. The gilding was repeatedly reworked and shows a variety of bronzing. The various phenomena are categorized, based on properties in VIS, exposure to UV radiation and solubility. This is followed by taking samples and the evaluation of the cross-sections. With this information the stages of reworking can be visualized and it will be possible to make general conclusions about the production. |
