Zusammenfassung: | This diploma thesis aimed to evaluate a paper conservation treatment using antioxidants such as benzotriazole in the vapor phase, which can be used to treat copper corroded objects. For this purpose, mock-ups with a paint layer containing the copper pigment Verdigris and gum arabic were applied to Whatman filter paper. These were treated with antioxidants such as benzotriazole (BTA) and tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB). To accelerate the aging process of the Verdigris pigment and to verify the effectiveness of the antioxidants, the mock-ups were subjected to cycles of artificial aging at 50 °C and 65 %RH. Subsequent natural light aging, intended to document light-induced color changes in the paint layer and the paper, was performed. Scientific analysis methods such as X-ray fluorescence (XRF), spectrophotometry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy were used to investigate the effects of the applied treatment methods on the Verdigris pigment. Analyses was performed on untreated, antioxidant-treated, and aged mock-ups. The results show that, based on the treatment with BTA in the vapor phase, a change in the Verdigris pigment, during artificial aging, can be significantly delayed. This is a significant result for the efficient treatment of copper corroded objects. Furthermore, based on spectrophotometric analysis, color changes were detected in the treated and aged paint layer. However, this could not be proven in the case of the paper. |
