Zusammenfassung: | This diploma thesis deals with the conservation and restoration of an one-hundred-year-old wooden chest. It features a gable roof lid and incised ornaments and was constructed in carpentry style from split and bung-joined beech wood boards. The exact place of origin and time of creation are unknown. The construction method of this chest indicates a historically long-standing, previously widespread rural craft tradition. The place of origin is assumed to be in the Hungarian part of the k. u. k. Monarchy. These relatively uncertain circumstances justify the particular interest in examining and describing the manufacturing technique, construction, and surface design. Due to massive damage to the wood substance and structure caused by insect larvae, the chest is at a high risk of loss, and its stability is compromised. The surface appearance is inhomogeneous and has altered due to numerous breakouts, darkening, dirt, and dust. As part of the diploma thesis, conservation and restoration measures for cleaning, increasing the strength, and stabilizing the structure were developed. The main focus was laid on increasing the strength of the weakened wood substance through the successful use of Degalan P28. Stabilization of its stand was achieved by adding the missing bottom part of a stud with an interface - solid wood - combination of Renpaste and beech wood. In addition, all loose and misplaced parts are reattached using adhesive putty and fish glue. Ultimately, the appearance of the surface was improved using dry and damp cleaning sponges. |
