| Zusammenfassung: | The Large and Small Bergl Rooms are part of the former Imperial Apartments of the Vienna Hofburg. They were commissioned by Empress Maria-Theresia and designed by Johann Wenzel Bergl in 1766. Bergl achieved lasting fame with the execution of numerous illusionistic garden rooms for Melk Abbey and the Viennese Imperial Court. He was inspired by tapestry series from the Manufactureroyale des Gobelins based on designs by Albert Eckhout. The diploma thesis includes the wall paintings of the Bergl rooms, which were executed in secco technique. The inventory and condition were extensively examined, mapped and photographically documented. The methods used included multispectral imaging, hyperspectral imaging, FTIR-ATR and scanning electron microscopy to determine historical and recent materials on the paintings. In addition, an investigation of the room climate was carried out. For the first time, the restoration history of the Bergl Rooms was examined in comparison with written sources and historical photographs. The thesis is extended with recommendations for the conservation of the wall paintings. |
