Zusammenfassung: From the early Middle Ages to modern times, book clasps and bindings were essential features of books. They were not only used as design elements, which varied in form depending on the era and region, but above all to protect the book block and the binding. As part of this bachelor´s thesis, a system and workflow for recording book clasps, fittings and their condition was developed to support the Dombibliothek Hildesheim (Hildesheim Cathedral Library) in the re-cataloguing of its incunabula collection. A special focus was therefore placed on the late Gothic period. The work also explains the production of book clasps and fittings in the 15th century and presents the types used in the late Gothic period. In addition, this work provides an overview of the most common damage phenomena to book clasps and fittings as well as recommendations for dealing with these in conservation and restoration.
