Zusammenfassung: This thesis documents the methodological development of a conservation and restoration concept as well as its implementation on the mural located on the ceiling in the antechamber of the summer refectory in the Salvatorian College in Vienna.
The depiction of St. Paul, executed in oil on lime-gypsum plaster, is to be dated around 1710. Aged, brittle varnishes caused a severely yellowed and darkened appearance and other damages, such as partial loss of the paint layer, and further limited the depictions readability. The lack of stability of the paint layer and cavities in the plaster endangered the original substance. In order to prevent further loss of substance and to make the painting legible again for the viewer, conservation and restoration measures were carried out, with the focus on the removal of secondary varnishes. The material combination of plaster and oil paint presented a particular challenge in the choice of conservation materials.
