Zusammenfassung: | The topic of this thesis is the scientific investigation, conservation, and restoration of a provincial Roman wall-painting-fragment from the stage theatre in contemporary Kärnten, Austria. The archaeological objects, that the fragment belongs to, are dated to the second century AD and are owned by the state museum in Kärnten. The goal of the thesis is to prepare the object with the inventory number Kiste 41-1 to be displayed at the state museum in Kärnten. The object is scientifically relevant for two main reasons. On the one hand, because of its filigree stucco half-relief. And on the other hand, for its wooden frame, which gives important insights into the restorative practices of 19th century Austria. The focus of this thesis lies on the conservation and restoration of the object as well as on the analysis of the paint and plaster layers. This analysis is then used as a study of the work-process of the late antiquity. Ultimately, the paper aims to reconstruct the composition of paint and plaster in the late antiquity. |
