Zusammenfassung: Subject of the present Master-Thesis is a baroque house altar, crafted at the end of the 17th century in Augsburg, which has been severely damaged by pillage. It originally belonged to the Green Vault and is now part of the collection of the Museum of Applied Arts (Kunstgewerbemuseum) of the Dresden State Art Collections (Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden). All the valuable and thereby essential parts of the decoration are lost, including coral figurines, painted enamel plaques and gemstones. Due to the poor condition, questions occurred concerning the exhibitability in a display context. During the examination of the object, special attention was paid to the decoration of high quality opaque émail en ronde bosse on silver. Additional emphasis was put on the house altar’s relation to works of the so-called “Augsburger Silberkistler” (specialized carpenters) decorated with “Zwischgold”. Furthermore, this thesis includes a specific documentation-system appropriate for the examination and condition survey of the object and about 500 separately stored parts of its decoration. The condition and the resulting shift in the value of the object lead to the decision not to display the house altar solely as a prestigious exhibit. Its current and future value lies rather in its ability to illustrate various aspects such as materials and techniques of artistic craftwork, object-related history and issues related to conservation ethics. With reference to the complex requirements when displaying a fragmentary piece of splendour, the proposed solutions include conservation treatment as well as processing image-based data and dissemination amongst the public. In addition to the conservation proposal the paper therefore includes a concept for display.Cleaning, reshaping of heavily distorted parts and the attribution and re-fitting of separately stored parts is planned within an illustrative section.
