The topic of this thesis is an 18th/19th century ´´shellwork vase´´ from the collection of the ´´Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein Gotha´´. This object is especially characterised by the depiction of a bouquet of flowers in a stylised vase made of mainly conchylia. It is a particularly special handcrafted object where the designer incorporated the most different materials both in an artistic way and with regards to natural history, to illustrate them in a kind of three-dimensional sculptural picture.The uniqueness, production and working techniques of this handicraft will be explored through literature research, while additional scientific investigations will give information about the used materials. Based on the materials and on their individual pattern of damage, an appropriate concept of conservation and restoration is developed, which in its majority could be implemented and discussed in this thesis. Furthermore a concept for the preventive conservation regarding the object´s future storage and for a possible presentation in an exhibition is developed.
