Zusammenfassung: | In the Indigo Rein B.A.S.F. sample book, an interaction of textile fibers with the paper was observed. The papers that were in contact with the samples are partially discolored or browned. The interaction of textile patterns and paper in pattern books has not been researched so far. This work is intended to be the first step in the search for suitable conservation methods and to describe the phenomenon. Sample books of different manufacturers, among others BASF, MLB Hoechst and Farbwerke Bayer from the period 1898 to 1914 were examined. The basis for an interaction of the two materials was worked out. Aniline black and alizarin red were examined as exemplary, since they show a remarkably high interaction with the paper. Aniline black causes browning of the paper, which possibly represents accelerated aging of the paper. Alizarin red migrates into the paper and discolors it reddish. It makes no difference whether the dyes were printed or dyed. A non-invasive investigation strategy using microscopy, CLSM, FTIR-ATR and XRF was developed and carried out. This was supplemented with SEM and SEM-EDX and measurement of pH values. UV imaging can be used to visualize reactions that are not visible in VIS. The dyes were investigated exemplarily by TLC, FTIR and Raman. Furthermore, aniline black recipes were reproduced and a test series was started. The samples produced were artificially aged in contact with paper. |
