Zusammenfassung: The object treated in this Bachelor-Thesis is a part of Molsdorf Castle, which is situated in the correspondent village near Erfurt. The topic itself is a side room located in the loft area to the east of the library. The design of this room dates from 1910. From correspondence between Countess Maria von Gneisenau, being the castles custodian at the time, and the architect Reinhold, master builder of the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, as well as from fixed plans, we can find evidence for the planning and execution of the arrangements. The result of these works is a richly decorated refuge for the countess, known either as resting alcove, aquarium room or closet of tears.
Although the room appears to be in a good state, it shows some defects at a closer look. Analyses of the pigments and binding materials, macro- and microscopic investigations and polished cross-sections delivered insights to the room‘s state. Amongst others, this concerns the present materials, the construction techniques of the paintings and the alterations caused by the restoration measures in the 1960s. Based on the investigation of the extant and condition, a conception of measures to deal with could be prepared.
