Zusammenfassung: This paper deals with the consolidation of porous paint-layers on canvas.
The studies are based on the results of a thorough scientific examination of a painting in mixed techniques, dated into the 20th century and now housed in the Angermuseum in Erfurt.
Examinations were carried out in visible light, ultraviolet light as well as infrared light. Fibres, pigments, fillers and binding media were determined by the means of micro-chemical methods and infrared-spectroscopy. To show similarities, the results were compared with other examination-results as well as with contemporary statements made by protagonists of German Expressionism.
The analysis of painting structures and binding media systems showed that severe damage in the paint layers can in parts be attributed to the use of (contemporary) special painting techniques. In terms of a consolidation technique for the highly sensitive matt and brittle paint layers, different consolidation measures have been researched in the relevant literature.
The case studies should support an evaluation of appropriate consolidation measures to formulate a conservation concept of the painting.
