Zusammenfassung: This Master-Thesis deals with the pedigree of Emperor Maximilian I., which is in the possession of the Friedrich-Schiller-University of Jena. The historic enlargement of the family tree is observed during the inventory process. In this context, the printed and coloured image carrier in parchment is treated, which in turn is bonded to a framed wooden plate. Special attention is given to the material-specific aging properties and the effects of external influences that characterize the state of the
object. These include biological impact, moisture damage and negative impacts of a former restoration. A tension-loaded coating based on protein is classified as extremely harmful.
On the basis of past studies, the identified materials but also the damage symptoms, an action plan for the conservation and restoration treatment has been developed. In this context, different ways of preservation are being discussed and have in parts been systematically tested. Of particular interest is a surface cleaning and consolidation of printing ink, colouring, parchment and wood panel. A further focus is the thinning or removal of damaging coating. The encountered problems are discussed in detail with regard to preservation of the material combination and the heterogeneous condition.
With regard to a museum presentation, and taking into account the historical, artistic and aesthetic dimension, the options and possibilities of reconstruction will be examined. A mean value for the air-conditioning is presented, based on the various materials.
