Zusammenfassung: Glass paintings in historic buildings are subject to a number of deteriorating influences. Until now, solar irradiation and its photochemical and secondary degradation effects have not been in the focus of damage analyses.
This paper investigates reasons, mechanisms and consequences of ageing processes in historic stained glass, induced by solar and heat radiation, and demonstrates the connections between degradation processes in historic stained glass windows and the stress factors of solar irradiation and thermal radiation in the context of other environmental influences. Furthermore, possible ways are being described to reduce the impact of irradiation-induced damaging processes on stained glass windows by the use of protective glazing.
Within this paper, the requirements on radiation-optimized protective glazing for original stained glass windows could be defined, and a concept of functionally and aesthetically optimized types of protective glazing was elaborated. This way, perspectives for a long-term conservation of historic painted glass windows by means of protective glazing could be developed.
