Zusammenfassung: The west wing of the city castle of Weimar houses an art-historical highlight of the Classicism. Lavishly decorated memorial rooms of the four major writers of the German classical period - Goethe, Schiller, Herder and Wieland - are located on the first floor. For several years now, efforts are being made to open this area to the visitors of the museum.
Within this part of the castle, a staircase is situated which is closely linked, both historically and artistically, to the memorial rooms. Colloquially, it is also called „Schillertreppe“ (Schiller staircase). Unfortunately, this staircase has until now remained widely unnoticed, despite its decorative room-settings in Pompeian style and its artistic wooden steps. Currently, conservation and restoration measures are planned to facilitate a future presentation of the staircase in context with the memorial rooms.
In this Master-Thesis, the foundations are being laid for the future conservation and restoration works to the staircase. For the first time, extensive analyses of the construction and of the mural paintings were conducted. This includes a comprehensive analysis of damaged structures, as well as an analysis of the rootcause for the damage.
A concept of measures was developed for the conservation and restoration of the polychromy, including emergency steps for the consolidation of the structures. The major steps of the necessary procedures were demonstrated on a reference-field to proof their feasibility. Finally, measures for the preventive conservation as well as options for the presentation of the Schiller staircase were included in the work.
