Zusammenfassung: | What damage risks are inherent to the matting of a piece of art? This question is posed in connection with two matted photographic objects by the artist Otto Umbehr, from the Collection of Photography and New Media in the Sprengel Museum in Hannover. For evaluating the damage risks, the pieces and the materials of their mats are separately examined under the aspect of conservation. The non-destructive technique includes the application of a stereo microscope and an ultraviolet-light lamp. In addition, the mats are put to a pH test. The available elements of the two pieces are examined as to their production method, their components and their processes of decomposition and they are analysed with reference to relevant literature. Reactions and effects traced back to the process of matting are documented and conservation recommendations are deduced. |
