Zusammenfassung: | The present paper deals with the preparation of a concept for the conservation of two heavily‐damaged paintings on canvas. The paintings show the two Protestant reformers Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon, whose depictions are based on prototypes by Lucas Cranach. On the basis of a preceding technological analysis, the paintings could be dated in the middle of the 19thcentury. Further analysis of possible causes for the present damage was carried out to explain e.g. the appearance of the extreme fissures in the canvas and the compressions of the paint‐layers. The causes are unsuitable storage‐conditions, the painting techniques, the low spin of the threads and mechanical actions plus direct contact with water. In addition, the paper addresses the issue of the use of Copaiba‐Balsam as a varnish and the ensuing present damage to the paint‐surface. To prepare the paintings for transport, the following objectives were aimed at: The protection of the paint‐layers, the application of a „facing”, the removal of a patch on the reverse of the effigy of Melanchthon and the fixing of loose components. The necessary steps were analysed during preliminary considerations and partially tested and evaluated on the object itself and also on a dummy. |
