Zusammenfassung: The wall paintings of the roman choir‐chapel St. Maria Magdalena of the village Langenhain is dated
back to the beginning of the 14th century. The aim of this diploma thesis was to examine the
technology, history and physical behaviour of the painting with the use of a sample part of the
eastern wall. Another part was to evaluate the right materials and techniques for conservation and
presentation of the wall painting, since the condition of the wall painting is serious. A survey of the
condition was made and the deterioration mechanisms were discussed. One of the main themes was
to test different grouts to consolidate and to backfill cavities. Various methods were tested in situ to
consolidate the extremely damaged paint layers of the wall painting. Smaller aeras had been
retouched.
On the basis of these sample area, strategies were elaborated for the future conservation and
restoration of the northern and southern walls.
