Zusammenfassung: | The Provincially-made upholstered bench is part of a seven-piece seating group from the Renaissance castle Greillenstein, and is dated to 1720. Typical loss factors of upholstered furniture are discussed as part of an inventory and condition analysis, and are primarily caused by use and pest infestation. The focus of conservation and restoration work is in the cleaning and securing the fragile covering material of Utrecht velvet: the pile is mohair, its characteristic pattern is created by pressure and heat. In the textile conservation method selected, cleaning and securing methods are tested, adapted to the requirements of the pressed velvet and applied to the furniture. Finally, advice for dealing with historic furniture in museums is given. |
