Zusammenfassung: | Medieval bricks are often deteriorated due to salts. A special phenomenon is the deterioration of only some bricks on the upper side of vaults. This problem was investigated in three danish churches. Presumably the low fired brick are endangered by salts. Saltanalyses have shown that all bricks contain sodiumchloride and calciumsulphate. A weathering test has shown that sodiumchloride itself has no deteriorating character. Only low fired bricks were deteriorated during this test. So one can say that changing climate combined with salts can destroy those bricks. The measured climate in one of the churches shows that the climate is changing the most above the vaults. For preventing damages sacrificial layers are helpful. But most important is the correct climate, reached for example by climate chambers. |
