| Zusammenfassung: | Calcium oxalates are often found as an essential part of patina films on natural stone and plasters. As hardly soluble salts, calcium oxalates in natural patinas act as a protective layer against acid solutions und decay caused by the atmosphere. Based on this knowledge, a conservation method which generates an artificial layer of calcium oxalates has been developed by the opificio delle pietre dure in Flor-ence, Italy. By means of an aqueous solution of ammonium oxalate, a thin layer of calcium oxalate can be produced on calcareous surfaces like marble and fresco. This artificial film of calcium oxalates has a maximum thickness of 10 μm and acts demonstrably as a surface protector against acid solutions. It is, therefore, a pre-ventative conservation treatment for natural stone and plasters against decay, caused by the atmosphere. |
