Zusammenfassung: In the fire that ravaged the HAAB library in Weimar, a part of the collection was damaged by heat and the water used for extinguishing. These damaged books are meant to be restored in next few years, unfortunately though, there is little experience in this specialised field.
In this thesis uncomplicated methods of analysing artificially aged leathers are presented. The results of these methods would be applicable to the damaged leather book covers and useful for their restoration.
Additionally the question is raised in accordance with preventive conservation, can testing done on artificially aged leather replace sample testing of the historically valuable originals?
The test results will be presented to the conservators of the HAAB Weimar in which the Ts-MHT method (shrinkage temperature) and the measuring the pH levels with microglasselectrodes are recommended/ preferred.
The results of the thesis show that the artificially aged leather cannot replace testing done on samples of the original, it can notably reduce it, though.
