Zusammenfassung: Subject of the master thesis is a shield from the region of the lower Sepik river in New Guinea owned by the Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum Hildesheim. It was probably made at the end of the 19th century.
Initially the object is placed in his historical context which is followed by the technological investigation of the different materials.
Furthermore the current state of the object is examined recording all existing damages, their causes and indications of former interventions, subsequently resulting in a treatment concept for conservation. The latter includes both treatments of preventive conservation and the design of a transport box.
The thesis closes with a demonstration of a possible presentation of the exhibit. In this connection, the design of a support for the shield, recommendable materials, the construction of a showcase as well as the arrangement of the objects in an exhibition are described.
