Zusammenfassung: “Raising of the Cross” is part of a Passion Cycle from the monastery of Herzogenburg in Lower Austria. In the 19th century a restoration had been undertaken which resulted not only in a reduction of the format but had included the application of an oily coating containing lead white to the verso. During the glueing of the support to a board in 1960, three large tears (totally 70 cm length) occurred and the surface became very flattened while the structure of the canvas appeared more strongly. The main focus of this thesis was the difficult detatchment of the painting from the board. Preliminary tests for the reduction of the whitish coating led to the decision to use a sand blaster for this purpose. Afterwards the tears had to be mended, followed by a cleaning of the surface and reducing of the darkened varnish areas. Finally, all lacunae in the paint were filled and retouching gave restored the original impression of the depiction.
