Zusammenfassung: The architectural surfaces of the northern façade of the romanesque Gurk Cathedral, some of
which are more than 700 years old, reflect the different eras and structural changes of the
building over the centuries. These historical aspects are dealt with at the beginning of this thesis. Over the past 25 years, a drastic deterioration of the condition leading almost to total loss of these historic surfaces is to be regretted. The most concerning pattern of damage, evident on the façade, is a form of scaling including large areas of plaster detachment and resulting voids. Through detailed studies and scientific analyses, the inventory is to be investigated, secured and the phenomenology of the damages is to be clarified. Based on this, a conservation concept is to be developed, which enables a sustainable preservation of the historical surfaces.
