Zusammenfassung: This thesis is about the examination of a wooden John the Baptist sculpture carrying the attributes lamb, book and cross-staff from the evangelical-lutheran women’s monastery in Fischbeck. The object was removed from the baroque high altar in the St. Johannis church at the beginning of the 20th century. It was placed on the first floor of the western cloister wing, where the sculpture shows a heavily green oxidized bronze which has a negative impact not only on the appearance, but also on the state of preservation. The aim of this work is the development of a restoration concept focusing on the exposure of the original polychrome surface. Solvent test sequences and various mechanical procedures are used for this purpose. Based on these results, samples are created to remove the gold bronze. First of all, a technological examination is carried out with material analyzes and, in addition, the current state of preservation is recorded. In order to be able to clarify the causes of the damage, measurements on the climatic conditions at the object location and in the St. Johannis abbey are made and evaluated. Finally, a recommendation for the restoration and future presentation of the object will be given.
