Overview:

Abstract: During the editing of the catalogue raisonnée of drawings by Paula Modersohn-Becker (1876 – 1907), discrepancies arose concerning the classification of the drawing media used. Although described as charcoal drawings, some drawings differ in the outward appearance of the stroke. This led the question arose about the possibilities of identifying black, dry drawing media.
This work deals with the black, dry drawing media Charcoal, chalk and graphite. Characteristic external features are elaborated and identification tools will be described. For this purpose, it is first dealt with the description of the three drawing media in the literature in detail. Modern reference samples corresponding to historical materials are then examined optically with a magnifying glass and a digital reflected light microscope. Here the external characteristics of the stroke and its manipulability, as well as the morphology of the particles are described.
The established method of identification is applied on the basis of selected drawings by the artist Paula Modersohn-Becker.
