Abstract: | An analysis of damage phenomena on or through metal coatings and their causes was performed on 4 chosen objects of the cathedral treasure handwritings. The analysis relied both on optical inspection of the objects and an indirect method imitating damage phenomena on test pieces by accelerated ageing. The test pieces were manufactured of the putative materials of the handwritings. The determining parameters of the ageing process were a temperature of 40°C and a relative humidity varying between 30 and 60%. Unfortunately, only two damage phenomena were observed, namely “contact corrosion and the phenomenon of contact spotting which occurred on a couple of test pieces after 30 days, suggesting either unsuitable parameter choices or a technical flaw in the artificial ageing process. A preserving restoring concept is proposed. In future further research is necessary to develop an ageing standard for parchment based on the findings of this work. |
