Abstract: | The dissertation deals with the restoration of a copper object of the Berlin Antikensammlung by looking more closely into the supplementing materials of a first restoration from the end of the 19th century. Scientific examinations are giving information’s about the used materials and their probable origin from an Italian restoration workshop. The examinations should create a basement to be able to analyse and restore similar supplementing objects of the Berlin Antikensammlung. Considerations about manufacturing techniques of the Etruscan votive shield are another main emphasis of the dissertation. Besides latest research results about possible techniques of metal processing, theoretical thoughts about the manufacture of the shield will be discussed and supported by archaeological experiments. These will document the embossment of a copper plate in wooden form and of a bronze plate in “free emboss work” as a result to two reconstructed duplicates of the shield, which are available. |
