Abstract: | ’Raising of the Cross’ is part of a Passion Cycle from the monastery of Herzogenburg in Lower Austria. In the 19th century a restauration had been executed which resulted in a reduction of the format. An oily coating containing lead white was then applied on the backside and in 1960 the support was glued to a board. During this procedure three large tears (totally 70 cm length) occurred and the surface got a very flattened impression. The main focus of this thesis was the difficult removal of the painting from the board. Preliminary tests for the reduction of the whitish coating led to the decision of using a sand blaster for this purpose. Afterwards the tears had to be mended, followed by a cleaning of the surface. At the end all losses were filled and retouching gave back the original impression of the depiction. 127 pages, 292 illustrations |
