Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis proposes a concept for the conservation of the portal of the Northern transept and the paintings in the tympanum of the Minster of Freiburg. These objects have already been in a state of decay for a long period of time and should urgently be rescued. Different types of investigations have been carried out to assess the damages of the stone, mortar, and paintings to choose appropriate means and methods for conservation. The stones of the portal are still in a good state of preservation, but the paintings which date from the Romanesque period and have been repeatedly over-painted, amended, and restored are endangered for several reasons. Therefore this concept for conservation focuses on the paintings in the tympanum.
