Abstract: | Understanding the penetration processes during the addition of stabilising agents into the paper matrix is of essential importance for the selective use of conservation treatments. Therefore, the penetration behaviour of gelatine was investigated by covalent fluorescence labelling using Fluorescein-5-isothiocyanate. The visualisation was based on cross-sections. The specimens were analysed using fluorescence microscopy and confocal LASER scanning microscopy. Multi spectral images of the lateral distribution of the fluorochromated gelatin were taken. It was shown that the penetration behaviour is influenced by various factors such as application method, use of negative pressure, moisture content and degree of sizing of the paper samples. |
