Susanne Hoffmann: Panel painting of a late Gothic altar from the church in Oberschaar Back
Language: Original   -   Translation
Overview:

Abstract: This diploma thesis focuses on the art-technological investigation, concept development, and conservation of the left panel painting of a late Gothic altar. The object comes from the church in Oberschaar and has been in the museum called „Stadt- und Bergbaumuse-um“ in Freiberg since at least 1867. The panel painting is dated to the second half of the 15th century. In the past, the object was subject to climatic changes, which led to a reduc-tion in material moisture and a resulting change in dimensions. Furthermore, the painting was exposed to earlier cleaning measures, which resulted in loss and thinning of the paint layer. The painting is also disturbed by various stain-layers and a yellowed varnish on the front of the panel. The focus of the diploma thesis is on preparing a condition for exhibition.
