| Abstract: | This diploma thesis is dedicated to the art-technological examination, analysis and history, as well as the conservation and restoration of two former altarpiece wings from the church in Medingen. The panels are dated to the period between 1520 and 1530. The painted sides depict St Apollonia on the left and St Ursula on the right. Their double frame is a later addition. The wings were sawn open during an earlier restoration in the 1930s. The severed backs, which depicted the Martyrdom of the Ten Thousand, were destroyed during the Second World War. The thinning of the panels resulting from the separation led to severe warping and cracking of the wooden panel. Dealing with this damage was the main focus of the conservation and restoration measures in this work. The cracks in the right-hand panel were glued during the course of the work. In addition, a supporting structure was installed at the back. This stabilised the panel and is intended to prevent further deformation. |
