Abstract: | This thesis deals with the examination and restoration of two large-formar oil paintings by the artist Doris Titze, which are part of a ten-piece series. The main phenomenon observed on both artworks is the efflorescence of fatty acids, which distort the visual impression of the paintings significantly. Additional forms of deterioration include exuding oil binding medium on the surface and areas of heightened luminosity due to mechanical stress and polishing of the paint layer. These phenomena seem to be evidently linked to the paint employed, the composition of which was analyzed as a part of this research. The key aspect of this thesis was centered on the fatty acid efflorescence, regarding both the factors of its formation and the development and execution of a technique for its removal from the surface. Moreover, valuable insights were obtained through an Artist Interview with Doris Titze, encompassing the material and artistic techniques as well as information regarding the past storage conditions of the paintings. |
