Abstract: | This thesis deals with a pair of wrestler’s breeches from the collection of the Weltmuseum Wien. The so-called Tunbān is primarily made of leather and textile. It is originating from the region of present-day Iraq and can be dated to the second half of the 19th century, based on comparative examples. The art and cultural-historical classification sheds light on its function and how it came to Vienna. As part of the technological and condition assessment, the materials of its components and insights into its manufacture are explained. The main focus of the work lays on the conservation of the leather and the previous biocide treatment of the trousers. A presentation concept for an upcoming exhibition at the Weltmuseum Wien is developed. |
