Abstract: | This thesis seeks to evaluate the suitability of the adenylate bioluminescence method for the application to the incunabula collection of the Dombibliothek of Hildesheim (cathedrals library). Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is an important energy carrier of vital cells, whereas adenosine monophosphate (AMP) is found in inactive cells and cell residues. This method can be used to detect biomass on surfaces. Potentially mould-contaminated volumes were discovered during the mass treatment of the incunabula to remove the self-adhesive tapes and stabilising preservation treatment. These were therefore excluded from further treatment and isolated. The condition of the incunabula was examined using microbiological examination methods and a series of tests were carried out in order to verify the adenylate measurement. The suitability of the method was validated by the tests. The test series established a statistically determined value - the attention value - in order to interpret the results of an adenylate measurement. |
