Overview:
Abstract: The wooden panel painting „Sacra Conversazione“ attributed to Francesco Bissolo (~1470-1554) from the collection of the Oberösterreichischen Landeskultur GmbH is dominated by extensive retouching and overpainting of various restoration phases, which cover about one third of the painting‘s surface. The original painting layer is serious damaged by losses and abrasions. Within the scope of the diploma thesis, technical examinations were carried out. Damages and changes due to earlier restorations were documented. Using cross-sections and pigment analyses (SEM-EDX), the painting technique could be compared with art technological sources and published examinations of other Venetian Renaissance paintings.
The focus of the practical work was on the treatment of the overpainted, reduced painting layer. For this purpose, methods were evaluated to remove the persistent retouches. In respect of the large-scale of the overpaint and the poor state of the original paint layers preservation it was decided, to restrict the treatment to sample areas. Here, in order to present the quality of the original, the overpaint was removed. The losses of those sections were integrated by filling and retouching.
