Abstract: | The subject of this thesis is the multiple POEMETRIE (1968) by Dieter Roth. The artwork is a special edition of Dieter Roth´s POETRIE series, which he published as a biannual publication between 1966 and 1969. The object is made of a yellowish-translucent plate made of plasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (p-PVC), which represents the cover of the book, while transparent p-PVC bags form the pages. The bags are printed on the outside with the text of the 4th edition of the biannual publication, while the bags themselves have been stuffed with minced mutton. Due to plasticizer migration, fat diffusion, and leakage, the text now floats in and on a sticky brownish surface layer and is at massive risk of being lost. In addition, soils such as dust and particles have settled on the sticky surface. The bags are severely deformed and the dispersion paint used to design the cover sheet is flaking at the edges. Dieter Roth´s thematization of an intended decay, not in the allegorical sense, but in real implementation, requires a closer examination of the artist and his oeuvre in order to understand the intention behind this work. To develop conservation strategies that reflect both the artistic intention and also take the material into account, a series of tests were established on mock-up materials. The testing series was used to gain a better understanding of the aging behavior of different types of p-PVC and to understand influencing factors such as soiling, fat, and meat. Additionally, cleaning tests were done with a focus on the use of surfactants. Different analytical methods have been applied such as FTIR-ATR, Py-GC/MS, optical microscopy (OM), and weighing, to analyze to samples and tests within this thesis. Next to the cleaning efficiency, other impacts on the material were studied. The results gained from the experimental section were then applied to the conservation treatment of the object. |
