Abstract: | In the course of renovation work in 2019, remains of a facade painting were found on the southeastern facade of the Gabriel Chapel at St. Sebastian´s Cemetery in Salzburg´s Old Town. It is a painted baldachin that framed an unknown main work in the lower wall section. Of the design, which was probably created at the time of construction in 1603 and discarded about 90 years later, only the fresco has survived in a highly fragmented state under various coatings and plasters. Within the scope of the diploma thesis, the inventory and condition were examined and a section of the wall painting was uncovered, on which a sample surface with various presentation possibilities was worked out. In addition to closing the illustration within the fragments, which had been disturbed by plaster chipping and superficial losses of the paint layer, the main task was to find a way to deal with the large missing parts, which reduce the wall painting to about 50% of its original inventory. By supplementing with colored plaster and schematic reconstruction of individual sections, the representation of the wall painting could be made more legible and experienced in its context to the overall design of the wall section. |
